Tips On Measuring Your Flange Size
Share
Confused about needing a different sized flange? We know. Breast pumps already seemed so confusing and now you have to measure your sore nipples?!
We've included some tips below to help you with measuring your nipple size to ensure you buy the best flange for you: o measure your flange size for a breast pump, you'll need to measure the diameter of your nipple, which will help determine the best flange size for comfort and efficiency. Here's how you can do it:
-
What you'll need:
- A soft measuring tape or a ruler
- A mirror (optional but helpful)
-
Prepare:
- Start by ensuring that you're in a relaxed position, preferably sitting comfortably.
- Clean and dry your hands and your breast.
- Stand or sit in front of a mirror, if you have one, for accuracy.
-
Measure your nipple diameter:
- Take your measuring tape or ruler and place it around the base of your nipple, where the areola meets the skin.
- Use the tape to measure the diameter of your nipple (not the areola). The diameter refers to the width of your nipple, not the surrounding tissue.
-
Choose your flange size:
- Once you know the diameter of your nipple, you can compare it to standard flange sizes. Flanges or 'Shield Inserts' typically come in sizes such as 21mm, 24mm, 27mm, etc.
- Generally, your flange should be about 2-4mm larger than your nipple diameter to ensure a good fit without causing discomfort or damaging your nipple.
Note: Different brands may have slightly different sizing, and some people may need to experiment with a few sizes to find the most comfortable and effective fit. Our Bellema Deluxe Wearable Breast Pump comes with 3 sizes, and is perfect for new mums who aren't quite sure what size will work best!
